International Credit Union Day: The Authentic Difference

Posted by Gabby Boyce on Oct 10, 2016 9:00:00 AM

For more than 160 years, credit unions have put people before profit.

In the 1850s, hard times hit Germany, and people turned to each other for help. They removed small savings from under mattresses and started making reasonably priced loans to one another. These early credit unions were the model for all the credit unions that followed: not-for-profit, democratically controlled and community oriented. The principles that guided them then, guide credit unions today.

International Credit Union Day Celebrates, The Authentic Difference

Posted by Gabby Boyce on Oct 3, 2016 9:00:00 AM

On October 20, 2016, credit unions around the world will celebrate International Credit Union Day (ICU Day).

Credit unions are not-for-profit financial cooperatives, offering the same services as other financial institutions, but with a people-first philosophy. Since 1948, on the third Thursday of every October, credit unions have celebrated the principles that make credit unions the best financial partners of people all over the world.  “The authentic difference,” this year’s ICU Day theme, zeroes in on what makes credit unions different from banks, fintech startups and other financial institutions—our principles.

Are Your Kids on Track to Financial Independence?

Posted by Gabby Boyce on Apr 4, 2016 10:00:39 AM

Are your kids on the right track to financial independence?

For many of today's young adults, the weakest link lies in learning the basics. According to a 2014 survey conducted by Harris Poll on behalf of Junior Achievement USA (2014 Teens and Personal Finance Survey), 40% of teens do not have a savings account, checking account, or debit or credit card, and 59% of teens do not have money management classes offered at their schools.

A Farewell Letter from Outgoing CEO, Patrick Basler

Posted by Gabby Boyce on Dec 14, 2015 8:46:05 AM

President’s Message

As I pen this letter, it is with both sadness and excitement that I will be leaving FFCU. Effective Monday, Dec 24th, Michael Abraham, FFCU’s current Vice President of Operations will become President/Chief Executive Officer of First Financial Credit Union.

The sadness of this announcement stems from the great organization I will be leaving.  When I look back to when I started here eight years ago, there have been an abundance of changes and transformations. Together, we’ve taken a small, one-office Credit Union that was originally chartered to serve the employees of AT&T Teletype, and have transformed FFCU into a financially strong, member-centric organization that serves multiple communities with multiple locations. None of this would have been accomplished without a great staff and loyal members. I am proud that our organization is continually looking for ways to add value to our members, whether it’s better rates, or staying on the front edge of new product and service offerings. Our Credit Union is committed to our purpose: helping members achieve financial success.

Current CEO, Patrick Basler will be stepping down from his role after eight years to take on his new position as Chief Strategy Officer with the League Service Corporation (LSC) based in Naperville, IL. Abraham has worked for First Financial Credit Union for two years. He began his career with the Credit Union as the Lending Manager and quickly moved up to be the Vice President of Operations in January 2015. Abraham’s previous experience includes a variety of financial industry managerial roles at companies including TMX Finance and Citigroup. How Credit Unions are taking over the world

Posted by Gabby Boyce on Oct 29, 2015 9:01:05 AM

The Credit Union Movement - condensed into this blog post.

Last month FFCU celebrated International Credit Union Day. This day has been celebrated since 1948 to recognize credit union history and show members our appreciation. The goal is to raise awareness about the great work that credit unions are doing around the world and give members the opportunity to get more involved with the administration of their credit union.

The theme for the celebration this year was, ‘People Helping People.’ After all, the heart of a credit union is people. Credit Unions around the world offer the same services as other financial institutions, but they have always been not-for-profit, democratically controlled, socially responsible, community focused, and financially sustainable. Why? At the end of the day, a credit union is people pooling their money to provide each other with affordable credit. A credit union is, quite simply, people helping people.
